Hello! We're already 12 days into 2015, but I've just now had a minute to sit down and think about my favorite songs of 2014. Last year when I shared my favorite songs, I cut it down to 10. Honestly, this year I just didn't want to try to cut it down. 2014 was an incredible year for music overall, and the older I get the more I truly love the songs that I like. The more music I listen to the easier it is to recognize songs that I'm going to love. I listened to most of the songs on this list on repeat for weeks or in constant rotation for months on end. iTunes has a function allowing you to view the date you added a song to it, so that is how I chose the songs for this year. Some of them came out before 2014, but I didn't find them until then. Anyways, there are 50 songs below that I just loved last year in a Spotify playlist.

The albums I loved most this year seemed to be few and far between. The albums I loved last year continued to be in constant rotation, so I didn't find myself searching for new music as much. I'm a person who still buys physical CDs which seems to be pretty rare in today's world. In an article that Taylor Swift wrote for the Wall Street Journal earlier this year (read here), she spoke about how young people today haven't stopped buying albums, we just only buy the one's that prove their value to us in some way. I couldn't agree more. I've spent plenty of money on albums over the years, and I've come to regret a few of those purchases. If I'm buying an entire album, I want to feel some emotional connection to it as a whole. That may sound stupid, but viewing it this way has led me to make better musical decisions overall. The albums that you feel a connection to are the ones that you'll still love years later. Again with this list, they didn't all come out last year, but I personally loved them in 2014.

  1. 1989 - Taylor Swift; I consider her the soundtrack of my life so far. She can do no wrong. Add every song on this album to the list above. I highly suggest you read that article linked above because this woman very obviously understands the industry. That is why she dominates it and does it so well.
  2. X - Ed Sheeran; While I don't know that I actually like this album better than + as a whole, I do know that I love some of the individual songs on this album more than most every other song I've ever heard. I'll be hearing Thinking Out Loud, Tenerife Sea, and a few others and for many years to come (full review here).
  3. Vessel - Twenty One Pilots; Mark 2014 as the year I finally discovered Twenty One Pilots. My biggest regret from Music Midtown was not spending more time at their show because I had no idea how incredible they were then. Don't let the masks fool you into thinking you won't love them like they fooled me.
  4. In the Lonely Hour - Sam Smith; Remember that thing I said about emotional connection, this album right here nails that. Plus, that voice is to die for (full review here).
  5. The 20/20 Experience Part 1 and 2 - Justin Timberlake; I realize that neither of these albums came out in 2014, but my appreciation for them grew so much this year. I never spent the time I should have listening to these albums top to bottom. In preparation for his show in December, I took that time, and holy crap I had been missing a lot.

I also still loved all of the albums I included in last year's album favorites which you can see here. I realize now that I have overwhelmed you with music, but I just had to share.

What were your favorite songs and albums in 2014?

Hello! This outfit is one of my most reached for, so I thought it was about time that it got a moment in the spotlight. I'm pretty good about not rewearing things the same way, but I keep reaching for this combination. I featured the polka dot skirt in my What I Wore: July 4th post, but I wanted to share it again in a different way. This was the first step into print mixing that I took, and I've got some tips that I think makes mixing prints a bit easier down below. Hope you enjoy!

I get a ton of wear out of this skirt because of it's length. My school and job both have dress codes that it fits into perfectly. I couldn't more highly recommend picking up a skirt this length if you work in retail like I do. I have to pick up a lot of trash off the floor, and I am constantly rearranging merchandise. It's the perfect length because you are never worried that you are going to flash anybody, but you don't feel overly covered up. It is also a really great piece that can work in different seasons.
The H&M shirt is super comfortable and one of my favorite things to throw on because it goes with pretty much everything. I was also really excited to pair a red lip and a red shoe with this look. I used my go-to red lipstick which is the Rimmel Kate Moss Lipstick in 01 that I talked about here, and the shoes are my trusty sunglass-printed Taylor Swift Keds (if you want to see those up close and personal, you can do that here).
Let's talk about why I love it all together. I've always been a little bit afraid of mixing prints. People say it is something you should do, but I wasn't sure until I came across this combination in my wardrobe. If you are wanting to start mixing prints, an outfit like this is a good way to get going.
Here's why I think it works.
  1. Stripes and polka dots always go together. Both are such classic prints that they work well with practically anything including each other.
  2. The patterns are different sizes. The stripes are smaller and overall less noticeable. Where as the white polka dots function as the attention-grabbing aspect of the skirt. When mixing prints, you always want them to be different sizes to keep the outfit from being overwhelming.
  3. It's all in the family. The top and bottom are both navy and white. Sticking to the same color family is a great way to ensure that your prints will work together.
I hope this gave you a bit of inspiration to look at your closet a bit differently. Finding new ways to mix pieces together is really one of my favorite things to do.

So, how do you mix prints?

Since I talked about her tour style last week, I wanted to share something inspired by her street style this time. Taylor looks amazing wherever she goes. Her street style usually includes a dress or some high waisted shorts. Today, I wanted to choose an outfit that was a little different for her. I have been obsessed with it since I saw the pictures of her in it. Taylor is no stranger to a great varsity jacket. For a quick example, she wore one while performing 22 on her Red Tour. If you want to see that one, I included that outfit in this post! This post is about an outfit she wore for one of her Rolling Stone covers and took to the streets of New York. If you are wanting to see that cover, it is here! She genuinely looks like she walked straight out of a fashion magazine. Everything about it screams effortlessly cool. This style steal is definitely more "inspired by" than a direct outfit steal like last weeks. I love this as a casual outfit on a windy spring day. It is so easy, and it feels so chic. I hope you enjoy!

Jacket: Forever 21
Shirt: H&M
Shorts: Forever 21
Boots: Wanted

To put together this outfit, the main thing you are going to need is the varsity-style jacket. I have been seeing a lot more of those in stores and magazines lately, so hopefully it won't be too hard to find. All of the other pieces are very basic. I chose one of my favorite graphic T-shirts (love a good Mean Girls reference) but any white shirt will do. If you are going for the true Taylor look, I would suggest tucking the shirt. She has loved doing that recently, and it adds a polished element to any look. I picked my plain denim shorts over a colored pair. Something about jean shorts feels really classic and All-American to me, so I thought it went perfectly with this look. Taylor is wearing an Oxford-style shoe with hers. I am still on the hunt for a great pair of those, so I threw on my trusty black boots. Throw on your favorite pair of shades (Hers are Ray-Ban Wayfarers, and mine are Clubmasters), and you are ready to go!

Is there any celebrity whose street style you really love?

Time for my first style steal! I chose to start with an outfit pretty directly taken from one of her concert outfits. This is the first outfit that she wore on her Red Tour this past year. I think that she ended up wearing 10 different outfits in the show, but she spent more time in this one than any other. It was definitely one of my favorites and one of the more everyday wearable outfits from the show. One of the things that I really love about this outfit is that she used red as a pop of color throughout it. Red really strongly contrasts with a black and white outfit, so it made the color stand out a lot more. I'm going to break down what I'm wearing below. Hope you like it!

Now that you've seen it all up close and personal, I'm going to tell you where I got everything.

Shirt: Forever 21
Pants: American Apparel
Shoes: Keds by Taylor Swift
Necklace: Forever 21

The main points to hit for recreating this outfit are a white top, a black high-waisted bottom, and pops of red throughout. I even threw in red nails (Wet N Wild Megalast Polish in Taking the Red-Eye) and her signature red lip (Rimmel Kate Moss Lipstick in 01). It is a super simple one to put together, and I think you'll get lots of compliments in something like this. Can't wait to share a more casual Taylor-inspired outfit with you next Saturday!

Do you have a favorite outfit that you have seen on a performer at a concert?

My school had our first ever winter formal last night. My mom and I did some serious online shopping and found the perfect dress! We found it at Dillard's. It is a Morgan & Co. Lace V-Back Gown, and it was only $89 which is pretty good for a formal dress in my opinion. It also comes in black if you are interested in it. My mom wanted me to add that it does have nude paneling underneath the lace. You won't have to worry about trying to find a slip or tank top to go underneath it.
Link to buy this dress!

If this dress looks familiar, that's because it is! After I had already ordered this dress, I realized I had seen something very similar on one Miss Taylor Swift at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards. I remember thinking she looked insanely beautiful this night, so I was pretty excited to find a dress so close to hers! I decided to go ahead and make my makeup similar to what I normally see her wearing. She always has a flawless face. It is a bit luminous, and her skin looks incredible smooth. That was step number one. Then, I decided to go for a more neutral eye that was still a bit smoky and winged eyeliner (of course)! I kept the lips neutral just like she did as I feel throwing on a bold lip with such a bright red dress would overpower it all a bit. I think it turned out pretty well. I'm going to take you through all the products that I used to achieve the look I just described.

Swatches From Left to Right: 1) I attempted to recreate the color of Barely

more pigmented than shown here. 2) Merle Norman Desert Shimmer 3) Merle
Norman Semi-Matte Cocoa 4) Merle Norman Sugar Plum
 5) Highlight Shade from Walking on Eggshells

Primer: Revlon Photoready and mark Please Hold Eye Primer

Powder: Rimmel Stay Matte in 001 Transparent
Blush: Wet N Wild Color Icon Blush in 831E Pearlescent Pink (which I've heard is a great dupe for Nars Orgasm if any of you are on the hunt for that)
Highlighter: Top shadow from the Wet N Wild Walking on Eggshells Trio
Shadows Used: Maybelline Color Tattoo in Barely Branded (lid), Merle Norman Eye Shadows in Sugar Plum (outer half of lid), Desert Shimmer (crease), and Cocoa (crease definer), Wet N Wild Color Icon Trio in C380B Walking on Eggshells (inner corners)
Eyeliners: Covergirl Perfect Point Plus Eyeliner in 210 Espresso on the bottom and mark What a Line Felt Tip Liner in Brownie Points for the top
Mascara: Maybelline The Rocket Volume Express in Brownish Black
